Fun Day!

The last Day of school at AJ was Fun Day!  The students were placed on 5 different teams and all met in the intermediate classroom.  They had about 10 minutes to come up with a team name and a cheer.  The teams were: Billy Gs, Bookworms, Sparkling Zucchinis, Team Awesome, and Diamond W.

In the morning the teams rotated through 5 different stations.  There was: Face Painting, Sidewalk Chalk Mural, Quick Change Relay, Obstacle Course,  and Balloon Pop & Bop.

At lunch PAC barbecued hot dogs and families brought desserts and side dishes to go with them.  We had a fantastic summer feast.  At lunch a lot of us also got into our swimming suits to be ready for the afternoon.

Water Fun was the theme for the afternoon.  The students made gigantic bubbles, tossed water balloons, rocketed down the soapy slip and slide, and tried their luck at the Fireman’s Relay and the Sponge Race.  It was very wet and very fun!

To finish off a great school year we gathered in the field for the Tug-o-War.  We matched up teams against teams, grades against grades, boys against girls, and adults against kids (the kids won by a long shot).

This was a great way to finish up a marvelous year!  I hope everyone has a wonderful summer and don’t forget to Read, Read, Read!

Summer Fun: Week 5

Last week I finished reading two great books. The first was The Maze Of Bones which is the first book in the 39 Clues series. The second book I read was The Doll People. This is one of the books that one of the classes we Skyped with recommended. I really enjoyed both of these books and have the second book in each series on order at the library. What books have you read this summer?

This week’s Reading Rockets ideas: Become a publisher
• Make your own joke book. Collect jokes and riddles from your family and friends.
• Cut out pictures from an old magazine or catalog. Write a story about them.
• Create a rebus story (a story that uses pictures to represent words). Write a short story, and then substitute pictures (that you draw or cut out) for some of the words.
• Start a round-robin story. Write the beginning, then ask friends to add to it until it has an ending.

This week try a new game from Funschool.com. Add, subtract, and multiply numbers fast in Math Popper. The objective of the game is to pop the balloons with the correct answer before time runs out!

Summer Fun: Week 4

I can’t believe how quickly the summer is flying by! I just got home from a great trip down island and now it is swimming lesson time for Brooklynn. A big thank you to Sophie for leaving a comment on the blog last week! I hope everyone is having lots of fun 🙂

This week’s Reading Rockets ideas: Enjoy the great outdoors
• Pick wildflowers and press them between the pages of a heavy book until the end of summer.
• Plan a backyard camping trip with a friend. List all the things you will need to survive.
• Plan a family ‘booknic’ at your favorite outdoor spot, such as the beach, a park, or the woods. Pack lunch and plenty to read.
• Collect shells at the beach or rocks along a trail. Use a nature guide to identify them.
• Find something small enough to put in your pocket. Write or tell a story about it.
• Look for shapes and designs in the clouds. Draw them.
• Word game! Make a list of words to describe fireworks.

Summer Fun: Week 3

If you haven’t tried the Week 1 or 2 activities I hope you’ll give them a try too. Here are some great things to try this week:

This week’s Reading Rockets ideas: Discover recipes for fun

  • List all the ice cream flavors you can think of. Now put them in A-BC order.
  • Invent a recipe for a cool summer drink. Write it on a recipe card. Serve the drink to your friends.
  • Go to the library and find a cookbook. Make the most interesting dish in the book.
  • Read the directions on a box of gelatin. Ask a parent if you can help make dessert tonight.
  • Work up an appetite by reading a story about food. Make and eat the food you read about.
  • Word game! How many smaller words can you find in the word watermelon?

Here is a great game to practice your addition facts and experiment with angles and force!
