Masala Youth Theatre-Written by Brooklynn

Yesterday we were lucky to get a visit from the Masala youth group who came all the way from Finland! In Finland they were performing a play all in Fin called Sointula. Then someone from Sointula contacted them and asked if they would put the play on here, and guess what, they said yes!

They are going to put on the play on the weekend that is all in Finnish and three hours long so on Wednesday they came to the school to do theater with us. It was so much fun!

We played Socket Tag when someone is it if they tag you you put your hands on your hips and to be freed someone who is not it has to put their arms through yours. We played it in the gym.

We also played a game to learn names where you shake two hands at once say your name twice then let go and find two more people. Eventually it turns into one long chain.

We all loved it. We hope they could come again and do it with us soon. It was so much fun!

  1. Dear Mrs. Watson’s class,

Hello! I am a grade 5 teacher in Ottawa, Canada. I enjoyed reading your post. It sounds like the play was a good one. You were lucky to have actors from Finland visit!

Thanks for sharing Socket Tag. It sounds like a good game to try with my class. By the way, my grade 5 class in Ottawa challenges your class to this challenge. It’s a ball passing game. Can your students beat our score? You can see our video at

  2. Hello Mrs. Watson and K/1/2/3,

What an experience! What a wonderful coincidence a youth group from FInland was performing a play with the same name as your town. I carried out an internet search and found an article written about the visit and adding a little historical information. Perhaps you have seen it but, if not, here is the link I found…

The article taught me Sointula has the Finnish meaning of “place of harmony”. I was fascinated reading about the history. 🙂

    • Dear Ross Mannell,
I have not looked at any Finland history or, new exciting news. I had lots of fun cause they went to our school a while ago. It was extremely magical and, glorious meeting them in person. It was also very dreadful when they had to go. I hope they come back in a year or two.

  3. Dear Brooklynn,
I thought it was so fun too. I don’t think they did it it with you guys, but we got to play this game were there is four people, and they get to act something. Well there are the 4 people, 2 people are students,1 person the teacher, and one person another student but late. the tow students are friends of the third student and the try to help the third one to tell the teacher why he or she is late. It was very funny when the theater group did it the first time. They also played this game with us were there is the hole class in a circle and one person at a time goes inside the circle and says something there going to do,but they do it still. Like say I was a tornado I have to stay still in the move. I like that socket game. The theater group was awesome. Do you think the theater group was awesome?
